The California Board of Recreation Therapy Certification strives to set forth values, ethical and legal obligations, and ethical standards to which recreation professionals aspire and by which their actions can be judged. Every individual certified by CBRTC shall abide by the Code of Ethics. Any violation of the purpose and the spirit of this Code shall be considered unethical.


Recreation therapy, also known as therapeutic recreation, is a systematic process that utilizes recreation and other activity-based interventions that are based upon the assessed needs of individuals with illnesses and/or disabling conditions The purpose of the RT process is to improve or maintain physical, cognitive, social, emotional and spiritual functioning in order to facilitate full participation in life. In our rapidly changing society, recreation therapy has been designated as one of the fastest-growing health care and human service occupations in the country.
