Agency Application + Renewals

The CBRTC has established the following application requirements for agencies that offer internship or work experience opportunities to students in recreation therapy university programs. The certifying criteria has been requested by the Recreation Therapy Section of the California Park and Recreation Society (CPRS) to ensure consistency and quality of training agencies. Students must fulfill one of the following experience requirements to become eligible to take the Recreation Therapist Certified (RTC) exam, offered by the California Board of Recreation Therapy Certification (CBRTC).

  • Complete a university internship course meeting a minimum of 600 hours and 15 consecutive weeks at a CBRTC certified agency and supervised by a state or national certified recreation therapist.
  • Complete 1,000 hours of paid and/or voluntary experience supervised by a state or national certified recreation therapist. A minimum of 600 hours must be completed at a CBRTC certified agency.

Obtaining certification as an agency with the California Board of Recreation Therapy Certification (CBRTC) can provide several advantages that can enhance the agency’s credibility and reputation. The largest employers of recreational therapists are hospitals, government, nursing care facilities, ambulatory healthcare services, and other social and human services. CBRTC certification can be an asset for the agency, particularly when seeking to establish itself as a reputable and trusted organization in the industry.

  • Fall Renewals: Due August 25th, 2025

To maintain your agency’s certification with CBRTC, renewal is required annually. Please make sure to type or write in all the information requested on the application and forms clearly, as any forms missing information or unable to read will be returned. It is important that the application, payment form, and all supporting documents are postmarked by the renewal deadline date to avoid the late fee and postmarked by the last day in March to avoid termination. Agency renewals not received within 30 days of the deadline date will be notified of termination, and CBRTC certified universities will be notified. If you are not contacted about renewal, or the main contact information changes, please notify CBRTC immediately to ensure you are receiving communications about certification renewal.
