Application
How do I apply?
- Download the Recreation Therapist Certified Examination Application and complete the application in its entirety. (Please see the sample RTC Application to ensure you complete the application correctly.)
- You may either submit:

What do I need to apply?
- Completed RTC Application
- SEALED official transcripts submitted either electronically through Parchment or mailed to: P.O. BOX 838 West Sacramento, CA 95605
- Letterhead or form proving agency experience
- Photocopy of diploma
What is the process/ timeline for examination?
- Once you submit your application with all supporting documents, a committee member will review your application. The committee member or CBRTC Executive Assistant will contact you directly should we have any questions or need additional information. This process may take 14 business days. Once you are approved, the CBRTC Executive Assistant will inform you of your eligibility and inform you of the dates we have available for examination.
Will my application be approved if I submit unofficial transcripts?
- No, CBRTC requires a sealed official transcript submitted through Parchment or to our P.O. Box.
Examination
When will I be notified of my approved/ rejected application?
- Applicants will receive notice of their eligibility at least 14 business days after submitting their application.
Where are the examinations located?
- We have three locations: Sunnyvale CA, Fresno CA, and Los Angeles CA.
Are the exams in-person or electronic?
- All exams are held in person.
Can I schedule my exam date and time?
- We do not allow examinees to schedule their date and time. Examination dates and times are set with the proctors at their individual locations. Examinees may choose which location they would like to sit at.
How long will I receive my results after I take the exam?
- Please allow 21 business days to receive your examination results.
What if I am not able to attend the scheduled exam?
- We understand things may come up! Please email the CBRTC Executive Assistant as soon as you know you will not make it to the exam. No-call/ no-shows are counted towards your attempt.
How many attempts do I get?
- You have three years to pass and earn certification. After your second attempt, you must pay a $100 re-examination fee. If you are unable to obtain your certification within 3 years, you will no longer be considered eligible and will be required to re-apply.
How often can I re-apply if I do not obtain my certification in three years?
- You can only re-apply for examination once before becoming ineligible for the CBRTC Examination.
Study Guide
Where can I purchase a study guide?
- Study guides are available for purchase by applicants only! Once you are approved to sit for the examination, the CBRTC Executive Assistant will offer the study guide to you.
Can I purchase the study guide without being eligible to sit for the exam?
- No, only examinees may purchase the study guide.
Can I apply for the exam and purchase the study guide in advance?
- Yes. Please inform the CBRTC Executive Assistant if you want to submit an application for a later examination date and receive the study guide early.
DETAILS
Upon being approved to take the CBRTC exam, you have three (3) years to pass and earn certification. It’s important to note that a passing score of at least 70% is required. You are provided with two (2) attempts to pass the exam; a third attempt will incur a $100 retake fee. All no-call/no-shows count as an attempt. If you are unable to obtain your certification within the 3 years (or after your third attempt), you will no longer be eligible to take the CBRTC exam, and you will be required to reapply. You can only reapply for the examination once before becoming ineligible for the CBRTC exam.
CERTIFICATION
Passing the examination will certify you as an RTC with CBRTC and is valid for two years. To maintain your certification, renewal is required by the expiration date on your certificate. Two months before your expiration date, you will be notified by email about applying for certification renewal. To renew your certificate, a renewal application, payment form, and
supporting documentation must be submitted. Supporting documentation includes proof of 20 hours (2.0 CEUs) of continued education courses or equivalent academic credit related to RT. If you are not contacted about renewal or your contact information changes, please notify CBRTC immediately to ensure you are receiving communications about your certification renewal.
